King Blood - Eyewash Silver LP

LP Hand Numbered Edition of 300 on Black

Xeroxed Insert on Orange Paper

Hand Assembled Artwork

Originally Released in an Edition of 100 in 2010 on Ignorant Gore

LP - $14.99 - [buy]

King Blood - Eyewash Silver LP art

In late 2010 a record came out of nowhere and blew our minds. That record was "Eyewash Silver" by King Blood. Unfortunately, it was issued in a limited edition of 100 copies and it disappeared faster than a fugitive at a busted up coke party. We initially discovered the record through a very enticing review that Doug Mosurock over at Still Single / Dusted wrote and our minds were blown when we received the records and realized that there was absolutely no hyperbole or exaggeration in Doug's review. For your reference, here's said review:

"Little anonymous fuzz guitar rudiment blowdown from ex-Snake Apartment guitarist Ryland Wharton (also the man behind the excellent Skulltones and Twonicorn labels). As King Blood, he lays down eight instrumental four-trackers rendered over a three-year period, nothing but guitar, bass and cymbal to keep time, and in that space the artist gets real, with simple themes repeated in a noisy, low-rent, yet meditative space. For as thick as these vibes get, the music itself is not necessarily aggressive, which is why these big, billowing songs sound gentle and bluesy and introspective, even in the overblown treatment most of them receive. Early Wooden Shjips or the Purling Hiss LP (and above all, Les Rallizes Denudes) would be good signposts for this album, but without the obvious psych moves like wah-solos and acid burn motifs, or the heavy drumming to keep time; King Blood wants to get you down by volume, and in that it is a drifting, uncompromising, diffuse and very loud success. 100 copies for this world, in paste-on sleeves – a few contain a silkscreened design on Stonehenge paper that was allegedly runoff from a gallery exhibition held earlier this summer. Those are signed and numbered as well. (availability? ask the angels...)"

Sounds exciting, right? Yeah, well it lives up to the review, and then some. "Eyewash Silver" is an incredible, dumbed-down, shit-fi, riff-drenched instrumental psych record that will KILL fans of Wooden Shjips / Les Rallizes Denudes (and all the rest of those touchstone bands mentioned in the review - Doug knows his shit). In fact, the same folks will be kicking themselves HARD if they don't grab one of these while they still have the (second) chance.

This limited reissue contains the same astounding sounds as the original pressing, but the artwork has been glorified. Each one of these 300 copies was lovingly hand-assembled, diligently hand-numbered, and carefully handled by Permanent staffers. We've heard of buyer's remorse, but never with records. It's always non-buyers remorse when it comes to wax. Don't fall victim (twice) on this one.

Charles Albright - Weight b/w I Am The Counter Culture (Drop Out) 7"

7" Hand Numbered Edition of 300 on Black

Xeroxed Insert

LP - $5.99 - [buy]

Charles Albright - Weight b/w I Am The Counter Culture (Drop Out) 7" art

There's more than one Charles Albright in this world. One is an infamous American serial killer from Dallas, Texas. Another is a brilliant mathematician and a versatile (to say the least) musician from Sacramento, California. One has been called many things such as The Ripper, The Slasher, and The Eyeball Killer. The other has also been called many things such as savant, proto, psych, and punk. We'll leave it to you to decide which of these titles is more appropriate for which Charles Albright. All of these adjectives sound pretty apt to us.

Doug Mosurock over at Still Single reviewed Charles' last 7" by saying: "Albright is...capable of formidable guitar/loner-rock destruction, Ginn/Hazelmyer-style phrasing, and blown-out live drumming. Everything’s cranked to 11, yet there’s a balance about the recording that is worth mentioning...it just keeps giving and giving." Albright's aptitude for "impressively over-driven bass, barreling drums, ray-gun guitar solo and zen-like titular mantra" have also been noted by the fine folks over at Terminal Boredom.

We're obviously not the only ones who've been anxiously awaiting a third record from Albright. And here it is...yet another blown-out, lo-fi, catchy punk jammer with loads of hooks and sweet riffs to complete the trifecta. Albright's still a fine young man and he's doing so well. He's still on drugs and he's still happy he's a genius (and so are we), but he's not singing about any of that on this record. This Sacto punk has brutalized us twice before, but never quite like this. The third time's definitely a charm and even though Charles is no longer a loner he is still absolutely in charge on this one.

"Weight" finds Mr. A drumless for the first time ever, but the repetitive riff-tensity hides the lack of percussion pretty damn well on this wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am punker. For the B-side, Charles must've taken a ride on the Silver Machine, but he's obviously still feeling mean, 'cuz the riff behind "I Am The Counter Culture (Drop Out)" sounds quite a bit like a certain Hawkwind jam we all know and love. But this ain't no cover song, "(Drop Out)" stands on it's own as a killer psychedelic punk number for the ages.

This incredible single is limited to 300 hand-numbered copies and preceeds the sure-to-be mind melting debut full-length due out this Fall. Turn on, Tune In, and "(Drop Out)" while supplies last.

Black Math - Phantom Power LP/Tape art
Black Math - Phantom Power LP/Tape art

Permanent Records is proud to be releasing a very limited 12" split EP between two of America's finest underground psychedelic rock bands, Purling Hiss and Puffy Areolas.

Philly's Purling Hiss have quickly made a name for themselves and in just over a year have already released 3 critically acclaimed LPs on Permanent, Richie, and Woodsist in addition to an upcoming 12" release on Mexican Summer. They've toured with Kurt Vile and the Violators and share members with Birds Of Maya. Purling Hiss' side is an epic (nearly 9 minutes long) psychedelic noise rock burner complete with Mike Polizze's signature shred all over it.

Ohio's Puffy Areolas have been destroying PA's and blowing minds at DIY venues for a couple years now. They are one of the best and most dangerous live acts going these days. They've released a handful of 7" singles and a well-received LP on Siltbreeze within the last year and are still raging across America leaving nothing but crushed beer cans, empty pill bottles, and roaches in their wake. Puffy Areolas' side of this split is a doom-y noise psych annihilator that clocks in a just under 8 minutes.

Both sides of this deep groove 12" split EP were cut at 45 RPM for maximum volume.

Not for the faint of heart.

Cosmonauts - Cosmonauts LP

LP Edition of 500 - 100 on Easter Egg Yellow (SOLD OUT), 400 on Black

Full Color Insert

Originally Released as a Cassette in an Edition of 250 in 2010 on Burger

LP - $14.99 - [buy]

Cosmonauts - Cosmonauts LP art

Cosmonauts are Orange County's premier garage psych group and they're barely old enough to drink legally. These kids have only been making music together for a short while, but they've already shared stages with and are garnering comparisons to well-known garage and psych acts like Black Angels, Ty Segall, and Thee Oh Sees. Although Cosmonauts share some similar influences with these groups, their sound is much grittier, more repetitive, and more Spacemen 3 influenced. Cassette tape tastemakers, Burger Records, released the Cosmonauts debut on tape back in 2010 and now it's available on wax for the first time courtesy of Permanent Records. Fans of the aforementioned bands will absolutely be calling themselves Cosmonauts fans before the year is out.

They played shows with many legendary punk groups such as X, the Lewd, Hüaut;sker Düaut; and appeared on "The Gift Of Noise" comp in 1983 alongside No Trend, F/i, Senseless Hate, and Smersh. They're a self-proclaimed INDUSTRIAL POP group.

The Psyclones are one of those rare, highly creative bands... this is an album of creative, almost playful explorations within a rock and roll/experimental framework.

Pop, progressive, industrial, and Chrome-like psychedelia.

From Unsound's Review of Psyclones "Psyclones" LP (Subterranean):

Tip-on Stoughton Jackets Created w/ Vintage Print From Original Pressing

Repro'd Inner-Sleeve & Center Labels

Busted At Oz LP art

Finally! After 30 long years since it's original release, THE DEFINITIVE CHICAGO PUNK DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE AGAIN ON VINYL! "Busted At Oz" was originally released in 1981 on Autumn Records. It has been long out-of-print and regularly fetches collector prices in stores and online. It contains some of the earliest recordings from well-known Chicago punk acts such as Naked Raygun and Effigies, as well as more obscure Chicago punk groups such as Strike Under, Subverts, Silver Abuse, and one of Chicago's first mostly-female post-punk groups, Da.

The tip-on jackets for this 30th Anniversary limited edition vinyl-only reissue were reproduced by Stoughton to look exactly like the original by using the actual vintage print left over from the original pressing!

The original master was expertly remastered for vinyl by Cooper Crain (CAVE). Additionally, the original printed inner sleeve has been reprinted. Also included are retrospective liner notes from original members of some of the bands. The best part...all proceeds will be donated to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.

Terry Nelson of Autumn Records:
Hats off to Lance and Liz at Permanent Records, for their enthusiasm, desire, and dedication to and for this project, without which it most likely would never have happened.

Cacaw - Cacaw LP art
Cacaw - Cacaw LP/Tape art

Back in early 2009, Permanent issued Cacaw's debut "Get A Brain" EP and quickly sold through the first pressing of 300 copies. There was an immediate repress, which has also since sold out. Here we are just over a year and a half later, proudly offering Cacaw's follow-up eponymous LP which has been pressed in a limited first edition of 500 copies. If you dug the brutal noise rock sounds crammed onto the one side of their debut EP, you're gonna flip over their brand new LP. It's heavier, louder, and longer. That's right, two full sides of Cacaw's signature noise rock brutality. A big selling point for their first release was the fact that two of the Coughs are in Cacaw, however, Cacaw have since garnered their own audience and the Coughs reference seems barely worth mentioning any longer. For those of you who haven't heard them yet, Cacaw takes the Coughs sound and distills it down to a more minimal yet no less intense brand of really fucking groovy noise rock. Cacaw have quickly become one of Chicago’s most popular underground rock bands. Fans who have witnessed their live shows always seem to leave begging for more. Check out some tracks here. Cacaw’s second record, just like their first release, is a doozie both sonically and visually. The grooves on the marbled colored vinyl contain some incredibly intense jams. The card stock tri-color jacket has also been diligently hand screen printed by band members. This release is more than a record its a piece of art.

Brain Idea - The Survival Scrolls LP/Tape art
Brain Idea - The Survival Scrolls LP/Tape art

Brain Idea is a relatively new Chicago band with nothing but one short cassette tape release to their name, until now. Their second tape release is also their debut full-length on Permanent Records. Here's what we said about their first cassette tape release back in December of '09:

One of Chicago's most exciting new bands! This is their debut tape and its UK DIY and NZ's the Clean influenced pop. Catchy as hell and totally DIY-style rock'n'roll. Highly recommended! By the way, re-recorded versions of these songs (and some extra material) will be released on your very own Permanent Records imprint later this year. Grab this 'demo' tape before it's gone to tide you over 'til then.

Well, the demo tape is out-of-print, but "The Survival Scrolls" is here in all of its fully-realized glory. The band took most of the material on the demo tape and re-recorded it with much more depth and reverb, especially on the vocals. There are some great instrumental interludes that tie the tracks together which are quite kraut-y in nature (these guys were the ones behind that NOi! tape (classic Oi! punk cuts covered krautrock-style), mind you). These guys are also in a CCR cover band called Graveyard Train, so you know they're of good taste. They cover the Clean for chrissakes. Fans of lo-fi DIY pop, krautrock, and CCR-esque maturity will absolutely dig Brian Idea. We fuckin' love 'em.

Black Math - Phantom Power LP/Tape art
Black Math - Phantom Power LP/Tape art

WFMU aptly described Black Math's debut LP from 2009 as "Dark-wave buried in tape hiss, with grinding synth, electric cello, and drum machine. The three piece lists Depeche Mode and Big Black as influences, but they're not straight up 80s." The band will also tell you that Siouxsie and the Banshees are a big influence, but Black Math has a completely compelling, catchy, dark and mysterious sound all their own.

Permanent released Black Math's eponymous debut LP in a paltry edition of 100 copies. It immediately SOLD OUT and has been asked for regularly ever since. One fan offered as much as $120, hoping to find a remaining copy! Needless to say, their follow-up LP has been highly anticipated. This album features 9 new tracks of killer dark-wave pop (with some pretty harsh sounding guitar and synth parts) as well as an amazing cover of the Anals' "Commando of Love" (from the Anals' now sold out LP "Total Anal," also on Permanent). First press is limited to 500 copies and includes a digital download link.

Running - Running LP/Tape art
Running - Running LP/Tape art

Running is one of America's best psych/punk bands. Running sounds to us like Clockcleaner, if they played twice as fast and half as long. The vocals are reverbed beyond recognition, the drums are pummeling, and the bass and guitar are abrasive feedback-laden. After pumping out a couple of incredible cassette tape only releases, Running went into the studio and recorded some of their material (semi) professionally. Those recordings have now been preserved to wax as Running's debut 12" EP. This eponymous EP comes housed in a jacket with really interestingly created artwork* and contains exactly 13 totally brutal weird punk songs. If these guys were jockier, they'd be a hardcore band. Thankfully, they're too arty for that ish. We'd love to point you in the direction of the band's Myspace page for a preview, but they don't have one. Trust us on this one, or preview "#1 Dad" on the Permanent Records Chicago Myspace page. This record fucking rips! The first pressing is limited to 500 copies!

*All album artwork by Scott Nadeau. A portion of the jacket image, which was originally a 9 color reduction woodcut and litograph (prints were included with the limited edition versions of this LP). The image is an appropriation of the Luc-Olivier Merson painting entitled "The Soldier Of Marathon" from 1869. It was drawn by a mechanical drawing device known as THE NOT EXACTLY REPEATABLE PICTORAL STATEMENT MACHINE. It was invented and fabricated by Harvey Moon.

Review of Running by Jason Jackowiak of Impose Magazine:
In an age where most bands are omnipresent on multiple social networking sites, blog blasts, satellite radio and 'round town paster bombings, it's refreshing to have a band like Running come along; they've no official web presence, probably couldn't manage to blurt out a tweet if there were a .45 pressed to the side of their head and seem more than willing to let their music do the talking for them. Their live shows already have some proclaiming them as the heir apparent to sorely missed misanthropes Clockcleaner, and while such lofty assertions aren't totally out of line, the Chicago group's particular brand of scum-rock is its own unique undertaking, reveling in a claustrophobic-as-fuck murk that can't see far enough past itself to care what the world at large has to say.

It's somewhat ironic, then, that such a vile slab is truly a work of art to behold; the jacket of the special edition, which, is absolutely worth tracking down, is a beautifully crafted 9-color litho/woodcut that was created using a complex computer program, and you can watch the whole thing being assembled here. Which, clearly makes Running a wolf in sheep's clothing, with its garrulous attack that is ugly to the core, the trio pick up the mantle of so many of their fallen/OD'd predecessors (think Hammerhead) as they pummel the listener with a complex array of textures, tempos and piercing bouts of brain-scrambling feedback. Perhaps as a paean to its title, the twofer of "Klassic Rok/Classic Ron" lurches around like an alcoholic uncle, fearlessly groping any/everything in its path as it looks to satisfy its every vice simultaneously, while the bass-driven assault of "Little Fucker" is a seething anthem centered around a tattered guitar riff and a ratfuck rhythm that's held together by duct tape and shoe laces. Cavernous reverb envelopes the otherwise indiscriminate vocals of "Overdrafter", swathing it to bits and unceremoniously ending in what can only be described as heavy breathing in an iron coffin. Their visceral dismembering of post-punk is most notable during opener "Garbage Truck" which sounds like nothing so much as Buzzo from Melvins taking a chainsaw to A Certain Ratio, and then the Hacienda entirely.

With this self-titled debut, the band have marked their territory alongside like-minded peers Pigeon Religion and Pop. 1280, seamlessly fusing together a string of disparate influences into something altogether greater than the sum of its parts - scummy, scaly and utterly reviling. They make no pretense about their malice, which, in a world beset by bands tacking "tra la la" onto the end of every chorus, is a welcome change indeed. You want to find Running? Then you best get your ass out to see them the next time they're stalking a stage in your neck of the woods, 'cos ain't no blog big enough to handle this lumbering, hirsute beast of a band. Oh, and bring a helmet.

Heater - God and Hair LP/Tape art
Heater - God and Hair LP/Tape art

Heater resides in a small college town off of I-70 known as Columbia, Missouri. The same cultural oasis in an otherwise sprawling rural wasteland that spawned Cave and Mahjongg, not to mention their various side-projects (ie. Lazer Crystal, Bitchin' Bajas, Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, etc.) Back in the late '90s and early '00s, Columbia was home to one of the most prolific, eccentric, and quality underground rock scenes in any small college town in America. You had to be there to know exactly what this writer is talking about, but hopefully someday you'll be able to live through it posthumously through a compilation release. The jury's currently out on that one, but that doesn't stop some of the members of that scene from making incredible new music currently. Heater is a three-piece Columbia super group, if such a thing exists. Heater's guitarist and lead singer, Zach "Zz" McLuckie, used to be a member of CAVE and Sneakers (both have released records on Permanent Records), among others. Heater's bassist / second guitarist, Jeremy "Jerusalem" Freeze also plays guitar in Jerusalem and the Starbaskets and both he and Heater's drummer, Jon "Wujj", formerly jammed together in California Raisins (their only release was a split 10" with CAVE also on Permanent).

Now that you have the band history, we might as well get into the sounds confined within, Heater's first widely distributed release. "God and Hair" is a super upbeat, melodic pop record in essence, but as I mentioned before, these guys come from a very DIY background. It's got some fast repetitive lo-fi punk rock jams with reverb enhanced vocals similar to those found on the Sneakers "Children Into People" EP, and some Clean-esque pop elements, but it's also got tracks with a great laid back summertime '90s alt-pop vibe not too dissimilar from the least noisy '90s moments of Sonic Youth and Sebadoh. All of these elements come together and make for a unique sound (thanks to a little help by Cooper Crain of CAVE's analog production techniques) and make for one hell of a summertime DIY pop jammer. Here comes the summer (of pop) here at Permanent Records.

We here at Permanent Records couldn't be more delighted to be sharing with you our very first Record Store Day exclusive release, a split 7" between (the brand new CAVE side project) Bitchin Bajas and Moon Duo (featuring Wooden Shjips' guitarist Erik 'Ripley' Johnson). CAVE and Wooden Shjips share a lot in common, but their respective side projects make an even better split pairing. Each band specializes in minimalist, repetitive psych that's obviously influenced by krautrock. However, they differ in that Bitchin Bajas focuses on melodic repetition while Moon Duo is heavier on the rhythm and quite a bit darker. This is Bitchin Bajas' debut release. Moon Duo has released three critically acclaimed records to date. Both tracks on this split are exclusive to this release, which is limited to 750 copies, never to be pressed again.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Unlistenable LP art

Steel Pole Bath Tub put out a bunch of killer records between 1986 and 1996, most of which are long out-of-print. Towards the end of their tenure, SPBT was signed to a major label in the free-for-all signing bonanza of the post-Nirvana years. The second album SPBT recorded in 1996 for their major was deemed "unlistenable" by the suits and went unreleased until 2001, when it came out on CD via Zero to One. So here we are 14 years after the original recording of this incredible record, releasing it on vinyl for the first time. The entire SPBT catalog is great, and is highly recommended to fans of the noise rock released on labels like AmRep and Noiseville, and genre defying bands like Chrome and Melvins, but "Unlistenable" stands out as a stellar document of a weird band at their weirdest, and it's a damn shame it took this long to finally hear it on wax.

Charles Albright - I'm Happy, I'm A Genius 7" EP art

Charles Albright self-released a 7" last year that knocked us out. It obviously had the same effect on Scott Soriano at S-S Records, 'cuz he reissued it on his own label. It's long since sold out and highly sought after. Anyhow, here's Mr. Albright's (not the serial killer, unfortunately) follow-up, a fine 7-song EP. It's a blown-out, lo-fi, catchy punk jammer with loads of hooks and sweet riffs. A couple of the tracks are experimental guitar instrumentals that give you a chance to catch your breath before picking yourself up off the ground to begin pogoing again. Charles is a big fan of Black Flag and if you are too (especially the early stuff), you'll probably dig this slab.

No Balls - Come Clean LP (U.S. Pressing)

Edition of 500 on Black

OUT OF PRINT

No Balls - Come Clean LP art

The debut LP by Brainbombs side-project, No Balls, old out immediately upon it's first release on the Swedish Release the Bats label. Here's the much more affordable, domestic pressing of 500 copies on Permanent. The only difference is the artwork. Just in case you're not already familiar with Brainbombs, here's a quick overview:

Brainbombs are a legendary Swedish noise rock band that've been putting out records for over two decades. They essentially drive dumbed-down, Stooges-esque riffs into the ground for 5 minutes, call 'em songs, and continue that way 'til the record is over, single or LP. Over the top, the vocalist delivers misogynist, creepy, and totally fucked up lyrics, all the while sounding like a serial killer writing his memoirs. Occasionally, there's some atonal trumpet skronk á la Steve Mackay's sax on "Fun House" in the mix. It's a simple, effective formula that should be easily replicated. Many have tried, but very few, if any have succeeded in the way Brainbombs have over the years. We're huge fans around here and we're honored to be working with these guys. For those of you already familiar with the Brainbombs MO, here's the deal. If you like Brainbombs, but you don't particularly care for the vocals, then you'll love this. If you like the Brainbombs, and the vocals, you'll still love this. "Come Clean" is brutal, pummeling, repetitive, noise rock at it's finest. Some folks are already calling it the RECORD OF THE YEAR.

Expo '70 bass/synth player Matt Hill has gone solo. His debut LP under the Umberto moniker is an analog masterpiece heavily influenced by the classic film score work of Goblin, except arguably better. From the moment you drop the needle, you'll be transported to Italy as an extra in a vintage horror flick directed by Dario Argento. Purling Hiss - Purling Hiss LP art

Purling Hiss is one of Philly's Best! Purling Hiss is the side-project of Holy Mountain recording artists, Birds of Maya, guitarist Mike Pollize. Birds of Maya are a full-on psychedelic rock band from Philly. Apparently, Birds just aren't full-on enough to satisfy Pollize's far-out tendencies. On his debut solo record, Pollize plays bass, drums, and guitar, relentlessly, as if he's playing to save his life. This recording is so intense that the pressing plant told us they'd risk breaking their equipment if they cut the lacquers with the original master. We sent 'em a new master and it sounds great! For Fans Of: Birds of Maya, Earthless, Loop, High Rise, Les Rallizes Denudes, and Lo-Fi Blown-Out Psych.

Mako Sica - Live on Mayday at Strobe LP art

Mako Sica is a Chicago band that features two former members of the underappreciated post-rock group Rope. However, post-rock doesn't really describe the sounds that Mako Sica make. Caucasian Desert Rock is the ridiculous sub-sub-genre that immediately came to mind the first time we saw them. Basically, Mako Sica sound like the more recent Dead Man Soundtrack-style Earth, if Earth were a Not Not Fun band. Live on Mayday at Strobe is Mako Sica's vinyl debut and it includes two sparse, but engaging, side-long tracks of trancelike psychedelia heavily influenced by the furthest out side of the Impulse Records catalog. At times, Mako Sica's sound is reminiscent of a Free Jazz-ier Group Doueh. As you can see, Mako Sica are a unique sounding group that are not easy to pigeonhole. Don't waste time trying to figure out where this is going to get filed in your collection as this release is limited to 120 hand-numbered, hand screen printed, hand stamped, hand assembled copies. Each copy includes a digital download of the entirety of the Strobe session recordings and a couple of super sweet inserts. We released it, so it's obviously comes with our highest recommendation. First come, first served.

Black Math - Debut LP art
Black Math - Debut LP 2nd Press art

Just over a year ago to, we released Black Math's debut LP. Here's what we said about it back in late July of '09:

The 7th record in our catalog is by a killer Chicago lo-fi bedroom pop trio called Black Math. We've pressed their debut LP in a limited edition of 100 copies with hand-stamped labels and insert artwork by ILTH of Daily Void. The jackets were hand-screened on both sides by Kyle of Cacaw. The record is loaded with dark, '80s UK cassette culture influenced, synth pop with guitar, cello, sparse reverb-drenched vocals, and drum machine beats you could dance to if you really wanted to. Fans of Joy Division, Tubeway Army, early Depeche Mode and OMD, and/or more contemporary stuff like Blank Dogs and Gary War will definitely dig the songs on this LP. Did we mention that it's limited to 100 copies and that it will be available pretty much exclusively from Permanent and the band?

The LP, limited to 100 copies, didn't last very long and has been asked about regularly ever since. One fan offered the band as much as $120 for a copy! Well fans, no need to give up a Benjamin for this record any longer. To coincide with the release of their second LP on Permanent, we've reissued it in another limited edition of 100 copies, this time the jackets are black and have been hand screen printed with beautiful purple ink. The inserts and hand stamped labels are slightly different, too. Grab one now before they disappear yet again. Black Math's debut has also been reissued on cassette tape via the Plus Tapes label.

Two records ago we laid a noisy slab of wax on you by a sick French band called the Anals. That was our label's sixth vinyl release. The now out-of-print Black Math record was released seventh, even though it's technically catalog number 008. Circumstances and delays beyond our control were the cause for this madness, but we're back on track now that we have PERM-007 in our hot little hands. 006 and 007 butt up nicely to each other in that they're both records by French weird punk bands. Cheveu is just as weird as Anals, but in a slightly more subtle, garage-punk kinda way. They sound like the Fall on acid, but you know, Frencher. How did we work out a record deal with a second weird French band you ask? Allow us to quote our August 30th weekly update:

Cheveu did an in-store a year or so ago with Feeling of Love and totally knocked us out. Before they left, they laid a CDR of unreleased material on us that we spun and spun and spun, until it dawned on us that this material needed to be released on vinyl. We wrote the band and asked them what they were planning on doing with this unreleased material. When we found out there was no vinyl release in the works, we made an offer and the rest is P-Rex history.

Well it wasn't history then, but it is now. You may purchase a copy of Cheveu's Cheveau from us directly as of right now for $14.99, if you so choose. Each copy is loaded with a FREE digital download code and limited edition white vinyl copies are available exclusively from us, while supplies last. There's only 100 and many of them are already spoken for, but we should have black vinyl around for a however long 400 copies lasts. You can preview one track from the release on the Permanent myspace page and another on Cheveu's myspace page. The tracks are titled Kador Du Porno and Pangolin respectively. Hope you dig 'em even half as much as we do.

Anals - Total Anal LP art

Metz, France seems to be teeming with great bands these days. Cheveu, Feeling of Love, Normals, and A.H. Kraken are just the tip of this incredibly huge Metz iceberg. Many of these bands share members, but they all have their very own sound. The Anals sound is similar to the aforementioned bands in their abrasive, weird punk base, but this duo is more obliviously influenced by the German industrial, electropunk group D.A.F. (via the Brainbombs) than any of their peers. Their single on Sweet Rot sold out almost immediately and the demand prompted a repress. Now here's your chance to hear this unique duo?s entire recorded output. This anthology LP includes both songs from the single, plus ten previously unreleased tracks.

Cacaw - Get a Brain 12" EP art

From the ashes of Coughs, formerly one of Chicago's best noise-rock bands, comes CACAW! Comprised of ardent members of the Chicago underground and art community (half-the band are professional screen printers), Cacaw is Carrie and Anya from Coughs, Zack from Lovely Little Girls, and Kyle from Slut Barf. Cacaw takes the Coughs sound and distills it down to a more minimal, yet no less intense brand of really fucking groovy noise rock. The band is essentially a double-bass guitar and drums rhythm section with some amplified can 'o' pennies, guitar, and snarly female vocals (vocal duties split between Anya and Carrie) over the top.

Though they have only existed for a little over a year, Cacaw have quickly become one of Chicago's most popular underground rock bands. Fans who have witnessed their live show always seem to leave begging for more. People outside of the city have started to take notice as well. Dan Friel of Parts and Labor says "Cacaw sounds smart, and evil, and heavy in an early-90's way, a la Amphetamine Reptile Records. So good." Check out some tracks here.

The "Get a Brain" EP is Cacaw's first release and it's a doozy both sonically and visually. The clear vinyl record has one side of incredibly intense rhythmic jams and the b-side has been beautifully screen printed by members of the band. The card stock tri-color jacket has also been diligently screen printed by band members. This release is more than a record, it's a piece of art.

Cave / California Raisins - split 10" + CD

Hand Screened Jacket

10" - $9.99 - [buy]

Cave / California Raisins - split 10" + CD art

Cave is back and this time they're sharing the limelight with Columbia, Missouri's newest group, California Raisins. The new, self titled Cave/California Raisins split is now available on 10" wax and includes a CD of the complete album. The California Raisins share nothing in common with the fictional R&B animated Raisins of the late-80s. These dudes get down and dirty on some groove-a-delic punk rock. They share a riff-loving mindset with Cave, but unlike Cave they have a full-time vocalist and a less overtly psychedelic sound. We'll leave the name dropping up to the critics because their sound is so unique, we're having a hard time thinking of any bands they sound like.

Although Cave is now based out of Chicago, they too once called Columbia, Missouri home. Cave shares members with the now-defunct Warhammer 48k that put out 2 intensely heavy and very psychedelic post-hardcore records. Most of the post-hardcore was worked out of their system in Warhammer and Cave has become a distillation of the heavy, psychedelic influences. They take a riff, jam it for all it's worth and then they have their way with it.

This limited edition vinyl 10" with CD is the latest release by Chicago's most exciting psychedelic band, Cave. The Cave side includes two epic psychedelic jams, possibly their best work to date. The California Raisins side is their first release. CD includes the same music that's on the 10". The jackets are hand-screen printed by members of Cave.

Drunks With Guns - Second Verses Tape

Edition of 100 - Official Reissue

Drunks With Guns - Second Verses CS art

Drunks With Guns were a nihilistic, noise rock / dumb punk band from St. Louis in the mid-to-late 80s.

Their second LP entitled "Second Verses" from 1990. Second Verses contains material recorded by Drunks With Guns between 1984-1990, including "Zombie", "Drunks Theme," "Punched", "Leprosy", "Enemy", an alternate take of "Wonderful Subdivision" with more guitar in the mix, "Two Minutes", "Drug Prolem", "DWI", and "A Beer". The original LP also included covers of the Weirdos' "Life of Crime" and the Stooges' "Raw Power", but those tracks have been cut from this cassette tape reissue per the band's request.

In case you missed our reissue of the debut LP on cassette. Here's the story behind Drunks With Guns:

This band is legendary and there's loads of rumor and heresy surrounding the legend. The band formed in 1984, released about a half-dozen singles and a couple LPs, played four shows and called it quits (well, in the same way Chrome called it quits anyway. The original singles and the LPs (and even the Complete Drunks With Guns tape) are virtually impossible to find these days. Among others, Monty Buckles of the Lamps is a big fan of the DWG and he wrote an excellent article in the last issue of Z-Gun that we definitely recommend reading at some point. Anyhow, we've reissued the Drunks With Guns "Second Verses" LP (sans the cover tracks) in an edition of 100 tapes and they're ready for consumption. This tape ain't no bootleg neither. We actually took the time to get in touch with Mike Doskocil, the singer from Drunks With Guns and got permission for the release. We were hoping to do an LP reissue, but apparently the master tapes are in unusable condition. Don't fret, these tapes were professionally dubbed and the fidelity is about as good as your gonna get out of a cassette tape (read: they sound like they should, especially for a Drunks With Guns release). Don't have a cassette deck? What better excuse to get one than a Drunks With Guns tape! Tape decks are littering thrift stores everywhere. Save them from the landfills and enjoy some of the sweet jams that have been issued on the cassette tape format lately, there have been some great ones! Fans of Brainbombs, Flipper, and all things noise rock will definitely want to snatch one of these up before their gone.
