Sonic Youth “The Eternal” is HERE + Even More Tunes To Get Those Toes Tappin’!

Hey Everybody,

Conan’s back and so are we! He’ll keep you entertained and we’ll keep you up to date on everything music related, especially the good stuff. Anyhow, we got a lot of bases to cover so we oughta get right down to it. Consider this the end of our opening monologue. Not funny, we know, we’ll let Conan take care of the giggles.

Many thanks to Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds for their amazing performance at the shop on Sunday. And a big THANKS to those of you who came out to show your support as well. We hope you all enjoyed it even half as much as we did. In our opinion, it was one of the best in-stores we’ve ever had! By the way, the new Kid Congo record Dracula Boots is a definite contender for album of the year in our book and it just happens to be in stock now for your listening pleasure (in stock on CD only but more LPs are on the way soon). Don’t let this one become the tragically overlooked album of ‘09. Get on it now and then you’ll have bragging rights to say you heard it before it was popping up on everyone’s Best Of 2009 lists. It’s a scream!

Speaking of quality records, have we got some sweet jams for you. This week brings us many toe tappers including a very obscure synth/punk gem from ‘82 you won’t find anywhere else, a rippin’ psych LP on Thrill Jockey, a sweet weird punk 7″ comp on UFO dictator, the Gunslingers’ frontman’s solo LP, and a few key restocks. We’ve also been busy marking down many quality new and used items that have gone tragically overlooked to make sure we overuse that lovely phrase. Read on for all the juicy details.

The very obscure synth/punk gem from ‘82 is a split 7″ by two Chicago bands called Occupants and Shortwave Band. We stumbled across an original a while back and liked it so much we dug into its’ origin. After an extensive internet search, which got us nowhere, we tried the old fashioned way, talking to people. I know, I know, we try not to do it as much as we can (haha), but talking to a few key Chicago scenester lifers got us the info we needed to get in touch with one of the former members of Occupants. He also happened to be the man responsible for the label that put out the 7″ back in ‘82, Unheard of Records. We really wanted to discuss reissuing the material, but he said he had some unplayed dead stock originals at home. He did indeed! That’s what we have for you here, folks. Original copies of the Occupants / Shortwave Band 7″ split with sleeves reproduced from the original. The Occupants side of the split sounds a bit like a more amateurish Devo, catchy as heck and filled with all sorts of weird synthy sounds. The Shortwave Band is two members of the Occupants and their side is more free-form instrumental, minimal synth stuff. Not unlike Tuxedomoon or the lighter side of Cabaret Voltaire, with a Joe Meek I Hear A New World vibe. Anyhow, both sides are totally killer in their own way. You can hear samples of each side of the split EP here. We guarantee you won’t find these anywhere else. We can’t guarantee that they’ll be around long.

Next up we got a UFO Dictator 7″ compilation titled I’d Buy That For A Dollar Vol. 1. This super limited EP includes some radical weird punk jams by the likes of Black Orphan, Menthols, Legendary Wings, and Los Steaks. There’s only 300 hand numbered copies of Vol. 1. Need we say anymore? Can’t wait for the second volume!

Thrill Jockey, while legendary, isn’t exactly known for releasing psychedelic space rock records. Fortunately for us, Bettina and Crew have been mixing it up quite a bit lately. Double Dagger is now a member of the TJ roster as is Pontiak. Thrill Jockey stalwarts fret not, a new Tortoise record is on the way, but for now you’ll have to settle for the first ever vinyl issue of the epoc White HillsHeads on Fire LP. This is an exemplary piece of psych rock wax that’ll knock you Earthless-lovin’, Hawkwind-adorin’, Heads-heads on your ass. Seriously, folks, this record will take you into outer-space and beyond. All we’re wondering is whether it’s going to end up in the reissue section of the best of ‘09 list or with the regular list since it has been available on CD previously. What a dilemma!

A while back we mentioned the Gunslingers, a totally incredible, psych-punk band from France. They played with Cave and Michael Yonkers at the last Plastic Crimewave-curated Million Tongues festival and really blew us all way. Their debut LP No More Invention is incredible. Scott Soriano of S-S Records gave it some serious praise in the last issue of Z-Gun (new issue soon, we hope!) and it’s definitely been getting regular play here in the shop. When band was in town, we managed to score some Gunslingers records directly from the band. We met the frontman, Gregory Raimo (aka GR), and bought the last copy he had of his latest solo record. After many emails, we’ve managed to score a handful of his latest solo LP, GR & Full-Blown Expansion. Now we’re having trouble deciding which record we like better. Although GR’s solo LP doesn’t rip testostertunes-style all the way through, it’s similarly psych-punk, but much more dynamic than No More Invention. We highly recommend this LP. Fans of Chrome, take note. Straight from France directly to you, that’s right.

Some key restocks include the incredible Mirrors Something the Would Never Do reissue LP, Oh Sees Zork’s Tape Bruise LP + CD, and both of the most recent World’s Lousy with Ideas 7″ and LP compilations. There’s a new issue of Yeti and loads of other stuff coming in this week that we’ll discuss in detail next week. Also, we’ve gone mental and marked down a bunch of stuff in the shop down to unheard of prices. The markdowns include sweet new and used LPs and CDs. Loads of used LPs added to the $1 bin as well. Come on by and see for yourself.

The P-Rex Crew
